Do you own more than 20 different Tom and Jerry DVD box sets? If you do you’re not alone, this wonderful cat and mouse duo has captured the hearts of millions of people around the world. In fact there is probably not a single country that has access to televisions that doesn’t air Tom and Jerry in their own language; it has become one of the most popular kids cartoon movies of all time. The show is one of the longest running cartoons ever to be made and has been on air since 1940; during the IRA bombings in London the main TV station had to close down transmission and evacuate its employees from the building, it was decided that Tom and Jerry should be played during this down time. This was so successful at raising people’s spirits that every time the TV station went down Tom and Jerry movies was always put on in place of regular programs.

The Tom and Jerry movies were started by William Hanna and Joseph Barbara a creative force who also went on to develop well known animations like the Flintstones, the Jetsons, Yogi bear and Huckle Berry hound. Many people don’t realize that 2 more creative directors followed on from William and Joseph, in 1960 after some time being shut down the MGM studios hired a Czech director with a very eccentric idea for the Tom and Jerry cartoon. Unfortunately his ideas were far too out there for the studio and he was replaced by the infamous Chuck Jones.
